Laparoscopy (key hole) surgery

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, is a modern, minimally invasive technique used in veterinary medicine. Instead of a large traditional incision, the procedure is performed using a small camera and specialised surgical instruments inserted through tiny incisions.

During a laparoscopic (keyhole) spay, two or three very small incisions, typically less than 1cm in length, are made to allow a camera and specialised surgical instruments to be inserted into the abdomen. The camera provides a magnified view of the surgical area on a screen, allowing the surgeon to perform the procedure without placing their hands inside the abdomen.

This differs from a traditional spay, where a single larger incision is made to allow direct access to the abdominal cavity. Because laparoscopic surgery uses much smaller incisions and causes less tissue disruption, many pets experience less discomfort and a faster recovery following surgery.

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery offers several advantages compared to conventional surgical methods. Some benefits include reduced post‑operative pain and discomfort, smaller incisions and minimal scarring, lower risk of infection and faster recovery.
