Cytology

Cytology is a quick, safe and minimally invasive diagnostic test that allows our veterinary team to examine your pet's cells under a microscope. It helps us investigate skin disease, ear problems, and other concerns.

By looking closer at your pet’s cells, cytology provides valuable insight into what may be causing a problem. This helps support diagnosis and enables us to create a tailored treatment plan for your pet.

A fine needle aspirate (FNA) is one of the most common types of cytology procedures. A very small needle is used to collect cells from a lump or swelling in your pet.

The sample is collected and examined under a microscope. This helps determine whether the lump is associated with inflammation, infection, cysts, or other underlying causes. FNAs are a valuable first step in assessing new or changing lumps and often help our vets decide if further tests or treatment for your pet are needed.

Ear swabs are a minimally invasive way of harvesting cells to for cytology. They are recommended to be used when pets show symptoms such as itching, head shaking, redness, or ear discharge.

During an ear swab, a small sample is gently collected from your pet’s ear canal and examined under a microscope. This allows our vets to identify the presence of bacteria, yeast, or ear mites, helping us choose the most effective and targeted treatment to relieve your pet's discomfort and help prevent recurrence.

In many cases, cytology samples can be examined promptly, sometimes during the same appointment. This rapid turnaround means our veterinary team can make informed decisions promptly, discuss findings with you, and begin appropriate treatment without unnecessary delays.

Cytology procedures such as FNA and ear swabs are minimally invasive and typically well tolerated. Most pets experience little to no discomfort, and the procedure is over within seconds.
