What is an anal gland expression, and why might my pet need it?

Anal gland expression, also known as anal sac expression or gland emptying, is a manual procedure used to relieve discomfort caused by full or impacted anal glands. These glands sit on both sides of your pet's bottom and would typically empty on their own while toileting. Some pets are unable to empty their anal glands naturally, which can lead to discomfort, swelling, or irritation. Anal gland expression can help relieve and usually resolve symptoms.

Our experienced vets and registered veterinary nurses can perform anal gland expression at an in clinic consultation. For pets who simply need routine support, anal gland expression may also be available as part of your pet grooming appointment.

What happens during an anal gland expression appointment?

During an appointment, our trained team will gently and safely express your pet’s anal glands to help relieve any pain or discomfort. The procedure is carried out by one of our vets or veterinary nurses with a calm and caring approach to ensure your pet feels as relaxed as possible. The appointment is usually quick, and most pets tolerate the procedure very well. If needed, we may also check for signs of infection, inflammation, or pain, and recommend further veterinary care or treatment to keep your pet healthy and comfortable.

Does my pet need their anal glands expressed?

Many pets can naturally empty their anal glands on their own, but sometimes they may need a little extra help. Knowing the signs can ensure your pet gets prompt, comfortable care, preventing infection and keeping your pet feeling comfortable.

Indicators that your pet may need their anal glands checked or expressed:

Scooting - dragging their bottom along the floor
Licking, chewing, or biting around their bottom
A strong, unpleasant smell coming from the rear
Visible discomfort when sitting, lying down, or toileting
Swelling or redness around the anal area
Restlessness or sensitivity when the area is touched
