What is a veterinary referral?

Sometimes, pets may need extra support to get the right care. Your vet may suggest a referral if:

How does the referral process work?

The process can vary from case to case, but it will usually look something like this:

  1. Step 1

    Referral arranged

After seeing your pet, your vet may suggest a referral. If you're happy to proceed, your pet's clinical history will be shared with the referral team. They'll then be in touch to book an appointment at a time that works for you.

  2. Step 2

    Initial consultation

At your referral appointment, the clinician will take the time to understand your pet's history, carry out a physical exam, explain what happens next (including any tests or treatment options), and answer any questions you have.

  3. Step 3

    Diagnosis and treatment

If you decide to go ahead, the referral team will arrange any tests, treatment, or surgery your pet needs. This may all happen on the same day, or over a few visits. It depends on what's best for your pet.

  4. Step 4

    Hospitalisation

If your pet needs to stay in hospital for treatment or recovery after surgery, they'll usually stay at the referral hospital, where a dedicated team is there 24 hours a day to care for them.

  5. Step 5

    Going home

When your pet is ready to go home, the referral team will explain any ongoing care needed. They'll also share a summary of treatment and aftercare with your usual vet, so their care continues smoothly.

  6. Step 6

    Continued care

The referral team and your usual vet will work together to support your pet's ongoing care, even once they're happily back home.

Got a question?

Can I refer my pet myself?

No, referrals need to be made by your regular vet. If you're concerned about your pet's condition or think they may need advanced care, speak to your vet first. They'll advise you on the best next steps.

What should I bring with me to a referral appointment?

To help your appointment run smoothly, please bring:
  • Any medication your pet is currently taking.
  • Any clinical notes or paperwork your vet has asked you to bring.
  • Signed insurance documents, if applicable.

What should I do when I arrive for an appointment?

Please arrive about 10 minutes early and check in at reception. This allows time to complete any insurance forms and deposits before your appointment.

During your consultation, your referral vet will take the time to understand your pet's health and the current concern. They may go over some details again to make sure they have the full picture. They'll examine your pet and explain any next steps (including tests, imaging, or treatment options). Some pets will go home the same day with a care plan, while others may need to stay for further tests or surgery. This sometimes includes an overnight stay.

Who should I contact if I have questions after my appointment or while my pet is in hospital?

Your referral vet is the best person to contact if you have any questions or concerns. You can reach them on our usual practice phone number: 01352 840 880

What will happen when my pet is discharged?

Pets are usually discharged during normal opening hours by a referral vet or nurse. You'll receive an update from the referral team (either over the phone or when collecting your pet), along with written guidance on your pet's care at home. This will cover test results or other findings, medication instructions, and details of follow-up care. A referral report and any results will also be sent to your usual vet within four working days.
